Aux yeux du public et des astronomes amateurs ou professionnels du monde entier, le télescope spatial Hubble (HST) s'est imposé comme l'un des plus fabuleux instruments mis à la disposition de l'astronomie.
Lancé dans l'espace le 24 Avril 1990 depuis Cap Canaveral et mis sur orbite par la navette spatiale Discovery (STS-31), le HST a été placé sur une orbite circulaire de type LEO inclinée à 28,5 degrés à l'équateur. Hubble accompli ainsi le tour de la Terre en environ 96 minutes à environ 600 km au-dessus de notre planète. Cette position dans l'espace permet au télescope d'effectuer des observations avec une très haute résolution, en infrarouge ou ultraviolet, sans les contraintes dues à l'atmosphère terrestre.
Le HST a révolutionné l'astronomie moderne, non seulement en tant qu'outil efficace pour effectuer de nouvelles découvertes, mais aussi en tant que leader pour la recherche astronomique en général.
Le programme Hubble est une collaboration entre la NASA et l'ESA. Sur plus de 1000 propositions d'utilisation du HST reçues chaque année, environ 250 sont finalement choisies et réalisées. L'accès d'Hubble aux scientifiques européens est garanti à 15 % de temps d'observations. Ces dernières années, la part de temps alloué aux scientifiques européens a été d'environ 20 %.
En explorant l'Univers, des planètes de notre propre Système Solaire aux galaxies les plus éloignées, le HST a non seulement contribué à de nombreuses découvertes scientifiques, mais a également suscité l'émerveillement du public en produisant de fantastiques images de cet Univers qui nous entoure, des images qui alimentent les rêves de chacun et l'imagination de tous.
L'oeil rivé au plus profond de l'espace, le HST a collecté pour les scientifiques des milliards d'octets de données, apportant au passage la preuve de l'existence des trous noirs, ou validant la théorie de l'expansion de l'Univers émise en 1929 par Edwin Hubble. Le télescope spatial a également observé en direct la naissance ou la mort d'étoiles, scruté le ciel profond à la recherche de galaxies éloignées ou révélé de fins détails dans des galaxies plus familières, et obtenu des clichés extraordinaires qui ont fait le tour du monde.
